Ben and I have been friends since the 9th grade. Even back then people thought we’d be married some day. Ben had been my date for our Freshman year Valentine’s Day Dance, our Sophmore year Homecoming Dance and Senior Prom. Our friendship continued throughout college and a year later we began dating.
The day Ben proposed he picked me up for a planned dinner with his family, but needed to stop by our High School first. In our old classroom where we first met, there sat a guitar, my favorite flowers, our high school Freshman yearbook and a note from Ben. The note was what he thought God’s perspective of our relationship was. When I finished, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. When I said yes he sat me down and played his guitar as he sang a song he wrote for me on my 16th birthday. Instead of dinner with his family we went to the restaurant of our first date and my best friend and her husband were waiting for us.
Our ceremony was held at our home church and was conducted by our pastor, Ben’s father. We wanted the theme to be simple but elegant. Our décor included fresh flowers, olive green accents and homemade reception pieces. We chose to have the reception at my father’s property because of its sentimental value. The best thing about the day was feeling God’s presence at our ceremony and knowing that tomorrow we would be waking up as husband and wife for the first time. There are few times in life when this many people get together to celebrate you and your spouse. In the end it’s all about your love and commitment to each other.
