Amy and James
amie and I are both musicians and share a love of music. We met one night while playing the same open mic at a club in Arlington. That night he told me that he wasn’t looking for anything serious. Apparently his mom gave his dad a similar line when they met. It is now known as the family curse.
After dating for a while, Jamie and his mom were running the Baltimore Marathon. His Dad, Robert, and I were at the finish line handling out the blankets to the racers, when Jamie finished the race and collapsed at my feet. When he got back up, he was holding his great grandmother’s ring and said, “Amy Joleene Sullivan, I will love you with my heart, my body, my soul for all my life, will you be my wife?” Even though we were surrounded by a bunch of women who were excited about seeing the proposal, it felt very intimate. It was also sooo Jamie because he turned one of his biggest accomplishments – finishing the Baltimore Marathon – into something about us rather than him.
Being in the industry, I co-own Country Way Flowers, I knew how I wanted the wedding to look. We chose a Midsummer Night’s Dream theme since we were both in high school productions of the play and had the wedding at our home at the foothills of the Blue Ridge. Jamie’s family are Francophiles, so we went with rustic French fare to accent the country setting. The music was the driving force in setting the mood of the day. Our invitations were designed to look like a concert poster, we had five musical acts that contributed to the “music festival” feel of the wedding and both Jamie and I played with our respective bands. We had a cigar, port and bourbon bar as well as a spot by a big tree where guests could play ‘dress-up’ and take silly photos of themselves.
To compliment the elegant country theme, we used natural benches for the ceremony and then they doubled as seats for the hay bale cocktail tables. We used burlap linens on the tables with white hem stitch napkins, bamboo chairs, hundreds of paper lanterns and lots of candle light to add romance to the night.
The best thing about the day was when you drove up the driveway, you entered the magic land of Jamie and Amy’s world…and we do live in our own little world!
